Structures such as buildings and bridges constantly experience fluctuating dynamic loads from wind, vehicles, pedestrians, occupants, crowds, and machinery. This seminar will discuss the impact of these excitation sources on structures, and, using a performance-based design approach, practical and proven methods of using damping systems for vibration control. Real-life examples will be used from projects completed by the first presenter (including an 800 ton TMD at Taipei 101, and other towers and bridges around the world).
The final part of the seminar describes fluid viscous dampers, in particular those specially designed to adopt different behaviours in the different range of velocities corresponding to wind and earthquake. The procedure and results of testing campaigns, aimed at verifying the dampers’ behaviour during both wind and earthquake input, are presented. Some examples of application in buildings are given, in particular in tall buildings.
Engineers and Architects, students * of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Surveyors.
(*) = required prerequisites: construction science and technique, statics, architectural composition, technical architecture.
The short course lasts 3 hours.
During the short course, the participant will be provided with:
M.Gabriella Castellano is a Civil Engineer with about 30 years experience in passive control of the seismic response of structures through seismic isolation and supplemental energy dissipation.
After the PhD in Structural Engineering, in which she studied non linear elastic models for elastomeric isolators, in 1996 joined FIP Industriale, and since then has continued working in the R&D Department of the same company, that in 2018 became FIP MEC. She has been involved in many research projects, aimed at developing innovative seismic devices for different types of structures, from petrochemical plants or nuclear power plants, to monumental buildings, as well as for non-structural elements (e.g. art objects), and published more than 90 scientific papers.
Since December 2020, she joined FIP MEC Academy, acting now as a consultant to structural engineers for the design of both new and existing structures with seismic isolation and/or energy dissipation devices, and giving regular lectures on seismic isolation and energy dissipation techniques.
